There are 18 stretches of road in Norway so spectacular they have been designated National Scenic Routes. One of those is road 889 to Havøysund. Despite living in Finnmark until I moved south to start my university studies about 15 years ago I had not experienced this road yet – so this trip was long overdue.
Road 889 winding through a rugged landscape
Reindeer along the road
The National Scenic Route to Havøysund runs from the costal sami village Kokelv to fishing village Havøysund, a total distance of 67 km. For most of the trip we drove with the Arctic Ocean on one side and a barren rocky landscape on the other.
Slate rock formation along the road
For most visitors coming to Finnmark the goal is North Cape at 71°North and many remain unaware of this detour through arctic coastal culture outside of the beaten path.
You get the feeling of being on the outermost edge of the country. There are attractions along the road, but for me the wild nature was the experience.
View from the road
Snefjord
Many of the national scenic routes have innovating architecture on viewing points and rest areas – and this one is no exception. In Lillefjord you will find a beautiful shelter and wooden bridge and in Snefjord there are boxed-in benches providing shelter from the wind. Both are designed by Pushak architects.
My favourite is however the rest stop in Selvika designed by Reiulf Ramstad architects. You will immediately recognise it as the concrete structure built along the road is quite dominating. Don’t miss the nature trail taking you through cultural heritage sites and remains of settlements from Neolithic times as well as from Sámi culture.
Heavy fog was hanging in the air when we stopped, not uncommon on warm sunny days.
Concrete sculpture at Selvika rest area
The road ends abruptly at the fishing village Havøysund on the edge of the Barents Sea. ‘Hurtigruten’, the Norwegian Coastal Voyage, has regular arrivals here and you will also find ferries to the island communities outside of Havøysund, Måsøy, Ingøya and Rolvsøy.
Our plan was to extend the trip by taking the ferry to Ingøya – more to come in the next post.

Are you planning or have you been on a roadtrip in Norway? I would love to hear about it! If you are planning a trip I would recommend checking out the National Scenic Routes of Norway on their homepage www.nasjonaleturistveger.no/en
In 2018 for sure, and thanks for the info. I can’t wait to visit Norway and more…Great shots.

Yes, I definately like Norway’s nature, especially the fjords 🙂 What I fear a bit are the expenses – Norway is one of the most expensive countries in Europe …
LikeLiked by 1 person
Yes – the fjords are pretty awesome! It is possible to travel in Norway on a lower budget as well. Stay in Bed and breakfasts or somewhere you can make some of you own food. You save a lot by avoiding the most expensive hotels and restaurants:)

Then I shall reconsider the visit in Norway 🙂 I will keep in mind your advises. Thanks a lot.

I would really love to visit Norway. Need to save up because getting there is especially costly. Hoping for a miracle so that I can visit that part of the world! 🙂 Maybe the opportunity will present itself in 3 to 4 years time.

Yes – travelling across the Atlantic tends to be expensive. But I never regret it when we go exploring the world. Memories and experiences are more worth than stuff!

Spectacular photos and road trip! I was in Norway, a long time ago, when I was sixteen, with my family on a three week vacation from my home country, Belgium. I’d love to go back and show it to my American husband, most likely when we have a camper again and will travel all of Europe… Thanks for sharing your wonderful experience, Inger!

Thank you very much Liesbet! How interesting to hear you’ve already visited Norway. Whereabouts in Norway did you go back then? Norway is perfect for going with a camper, so many lovely spots to camp:) I am sure your husband will love it as well:) Would you go all the way north to North Cape, the northernmost point in Europe? 🙂

Haha, no. Still quite a while to wait, but determined to get there. I’ve wanted to go to Norway for nearly as long as I’ve wanted to go to Iceland. Now that Iceland is ticked off, Norway is next on the list for the next time I’m over that side of the world.

What a stunning picture of the rock!!
I really enjoyed your post. I was in Norway with my car in the beginning of the 1990. It was a very beautiful trip and I often remember the Lofoten and the glaciers. I hope I will come back to this beautiful country one time!
LikeLiked by 1 person
Thank you so much Simone! I found the rock very fascinating as well. Wonder how it was made. I think they must have done some blasting in the area to make the road and it is amazing that this rock was still standing strong!
Lofoten yes… such an amazing part of our country. We are actually thinking about going there next summer. I have been once before but I was still a kid and probably didn’t enjoy the nature as much as I would today .. 🙂
Did you go all the way north to North Cape on your trip back in the 1990?
LikeLiked by 1 person
No, we had only three weeks and the Lofoten were the highest point. The Islands are so unreal and beautiful. And when you walk up the hills your feets sink in the deep moss. Amazing! 🙂

Splendid! Train journeys in Norway are great, but it seems car ones are to match! if only renting wasn’t so expensive…
LikeLiked by 1 person
Thank you so much! If you want to explore the northern-most parts of Norway car is your only option as there are no trains this far north. There is simply not enough people for it to make sense to build railways:) Alternatively there are buses, but you are not as flexible choosing the buses so I prefer the car up north. Have you been doing some exciting train journeys in Norway?

Really love your posts and photos! Can I ask 2 indecent questions? 1. In “Concrete sculpture at Selvika rest area” have you used some kind of filter? I like the mist effect… 2. When I click on the photographs it’s impossible to open them. How do you do that? I’am always super afraid that people steal my pics in my blog, so I think it’s a good thing not to allow people to click and open it…

1. No filter used. It was a very heavy fog coming in from the ocean this day and the sun was trying to break through the fog.
2. I have no idea:) I haven’t done anything special so maybe it is just a WordPress safety feature?

That sculpture built in middle of nowhere and huge…would be unheard of in Canada especially if involving hundreds of thousands of dollars.
LikeLiked by 1 person
Amazingly enough Jean this is not a man made sculpture – as such. I haven’t been able to find out exactly how it was made, but it could either be that they had to do some basting when they made the road and this particular piece was strong enough to resist – or it is simply a result of years of erosion.

Thank you so much Jet! This was a gorgeous stretch of road, I am sure I will go back again:) There was lots and lots of reindeer so we had to drive carefully. They are not what we would call wild, I’d say semi-wild maybe:) They are herded my the sami people in the arctic and do as such belong to someone. If you get close you can see their ears are marked. But they roam freely and are not fenced and behave as wild reindeer as such.
