November is here and first snow has fallen. The mountain tops are white, but it has not been cold enough for the lakes to freeze over. This is a beautiful time in the Rockies.
Banff National Park is one of the most visited national parks in the world, but November is usually a more quiet month for tourism. To take advantage of the season we decided to bring our camera and spend the weekend in Banff.
Two Jack Lake is a favourite among photographers for capturing the sunrise.
At this time of the year the elk gather for their annual rut. It is a chance to get some photos of bugling elk. Since Banff townsite is in the middle of a National Park it is not uncommon to find large herds of elk at the outskirts of the town.
We found this herd of elk close to the hot spring Cave and Basin, which is the birth place of the park. Banff was the first national park in Canada and the third in North America, only beaten by Yellowstone and Mackinac National Park.
Driving Bow Valley Parkway offered some lovely scenes of red and green – it almost felt like Christmas! This spot is called Moose Meadows. The name relates back to the 50s when moose were common here, but you’ll likely not see one here today.
If you are planning on driving Bow Valley Parkway you should check out the awesome interactive map Friends of Banff National Park has pulled together.
We didn’t see any wolves this time along the parkway. While scouting near the golf course a couple of coyotes crossed our path and observed us from a distance long enough to capture a few pictures before they disappeared into the trees.
Lake Louise is usually the busiest place in Banff National Park so strolling along the lake only seeing a handful of other people was a treat. The lake itself with sparkling reflections in the water and snow-covered trees surrounding it was like winter wonderland. What a perfect transition into winter!
Thank you so much for visiting! Please leave a comment, we love getting you feedback. Which photo was your favourite and why?
Gorgeous shots.

The Canadian Rockies is one of my favorite place. I promised myself to go back again some day but not with an organized tour. I want to see it again by driving myself, stop where I want and enjoy the scenery and the wildlife… and definitely not in the winter. (lol)

I so agree with you Alix – on both statements. The Canadian Rockies are lovely, and best explored at your own place! That also allows you to visit all those ‘secret’ places:) Winter is not too bad – eh!

I liked the coyote, as it was framed by the trees so well. Very nice, Inger! Hey, and great job on the history by knowing Mackinac was second! Most Michiganders don’t know that it was once a national park! 🙂

The coyote capture is my husbands favourite as well. There was actually two of them but when we stopped the car they headed is separate directions. I will admit I had some google assistance for the Mackinac facts:) Thanks for stopping by!

Thanks you so much Suzanne! We have been ready for snow for a while here, it usually comes a bit earlier than it did this year. All the fall colours have been gone for some time here, so it was lovely to see some snow instead of the brown trees:)

Thank you so much Sylvia! I was quite happy with the first. We were actually a bit late for sunrise and just caught the last little bit of it. Since we lost most of the colourful display I didn’t think it would be any good – but I actually quite like the yellow light:) Thanks for stopping by!

The first and last image are my favorite. The colors, clouds, reflections on the lake…superb. The last one is a wonderful composition. I have a few similar shots from a lake and park in Wisconsin. Having said that, all the images are just stunning and, as usual, great writing.

Thanks Ingrid! I liked the design of the previous design, but it was just to slow. I think it must have been because it was trying to upload all those photos on the front page. I just had to give it up and find something a bit simpler. I am quite happy with this one as well:)
I found you on FB but seems I am not able to ‘like’ you side so that get your posts on my page feed. Not sure why this is, but I am still in the learning phase on having a ‘page’ on FB… You might have some experience with this already?

Thank you! The coyote kept a safe distance to us, it was probably more afraid of us than we were of it. It sat there between the trees and watched us for probably 5 minutes before it decided to move on. An awesome experience!

First snow was beautiful! Most of the fall colours had already gone so it started to feel a bit brown and dark, the snow really lighted things up. Beautiful! And yes, I believe most ski hills are open now and there are many happy skiers out there!

Takk! Ja, mange av dyrene her er vant med folk (spesielt hjorten) og disse var ikke mer enn 10-20 meter unna oss. Coyotene er noe mer sky den holdt seg på god avstand, bilde er den er tatt med 600mm linse.

Your photos here are spectacular, Inger. You had great success in finding the wildlife, which might be part of the treat of the off-season and less humans. Really like the bugling elk and the coyote through the trees. Thanks for this delightful visit to Banff.

Thank you so much for your sweet comment Jet! Fall is definitely one of the best times of year to spot wildlife in Banff, I am sure that there being less humans is part for explaining why. This is the only time of year we have seen wolfs in the park, but not during this visit though. Thanks for stopping by!

We were grateful to see this much wildlife, I think the wildlife is sensing that there are less people around this time of year and are not hiding as much. It is also the first time I have seen Coyote in the mountains, we usually see them on the prairie.
