Banff National Park, Alberta It came from nowhere, stopped in the middle of the road and howled, before it disappeared again. Like many of the wolves in Banff National Park it was all black. I was captivated!
This is a moment I will never forget. This encounter happened along Bow Valley Parkway in Banff National Park. I told to my husband it couldn’t get any better than this – I was wrong. Around the next turn we came across the rest of the wolf pack leisurely walking on the road.
Despite the photo quality being horrendous I have to share this moment. It is not every day one comes across a pack of wolves.
Do you have an animal encounter you will never forget? I would love to hear about it.
Wow! They are gorgeous! 🙂
Yes they are – really amazing to get so close to them! And they didn’t really seem to mind. They seems just as curious as we were:)
I think I did encounter a coyote…in city of Vancouver when I was biking by the university.
My partner has seen a wolf twice in Stanley Park within the last 5 wks. Freaky in Vancouver. He’s had dogs for first few decades of his life, so he’s better at recognizing a wolf.
Oh my, I had no idea there was wolves in the city of Vancouver. I am not sure I would like to meet them in foot in Stanley Park! 🙂 Wonder why there are coming so close to the city?
I encountered a coyote while mountain biking at night here in Oklahoma. I say it was a coyote but at the time if I was asked what my first impression of the creature was I would have had to say wolf. He was much bigger than other coyotes I’d encountered in the past and he also lacked the fear that most coyotes exhibit when they encounter humans. This guy stood nearly hip high, very dark, quite shaggy and stared me down. It was only when my biking partner rode up behind me that he looked at him and just ambled off into the woods. It was quite unnerving the way he accessed us and it was like he decided that if it had just been me he might have done something but since there was another person – well it wasn’t worth the trouble so he moved on. It made enough of an impression on me that I started researching wolves in Oklahoma which there haven’t been any in this area for quite some time. What I did find out is that coyotes will mate with dogs and produce what they call a coydog. These can take on the characteristics of whatever breed dog they mated with so I believe what I saw that night was either a coydog – german shepherd or similar large breed dog – or just a wild dog. To this day I can’t mountain bike in that area without always wondering if it’s watching me from the trees.
I had no idea there even was such a thing as a coydog. I can imagine it was quite an unnerving situation. You feel somewhat vulnerable when it comes to meeting large animals in their natural environment!
Wow, that must have been an unforgettable experience. They are so beautiful!
I come from Slovakia where we have wolfs and now I live in Sweden where there are wolfs as well, but I have never seen any. I envy you 🙂
Yes the wolves were really amazing. I was not aware wolves could be black as well before I met the ones in Banff. Just a shame I didn’t have a better camera with me, my pictures don’t really do the wolves justice – they were amazing to watch! I know there are wolves on the boarder between Sweden and Norway, lately wolves have been observed frequently on the Norwegian side at least – but I have never seen a wolf back in Norway or Sweden either.
Thanks for reading!
